It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steven D. Thomson, M.D. at Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton. Steven passed away on the morning of August 10, 2026 at the age of 68 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Steven was born on September 7, 1957 in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Newark High School in 1975. He then went on to college to pursue his medical degree. He had the great honor of being in the first graduating class of Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), now called Northeast Ohio Medical University, in 1981. He completed the rigorous study of medicine in just six years. Steven did his psychiatric residency at Akron City Hospital and from there specialized in forensic psychiatry. He worked in numerous roles as a physician including clinical psychiatrist, faculty member at NEOUCOM and medical director of a psychiatric hospital. He was also a longtime member of the American Medical Association. Steven was a dedicated doctor with a passion for helping people. He found great joy in providing care and support to all those he helped.
Steven was a wonderful and devoted husband and an incredibly loving father. He had almost superhuman intelligence, quick wit and a very wry sense of humor. Though he was reserved and soft spoken, he chose his words carefully so they always came across as considerate and respectful. He enjoyed fishing, cooking meals with his wife, doing crossword puzzles, spending time with his family and watching Jeopardy. (He got almost every question right!) Steven was an avid music lover. He was trained in classical violin but was also known to rock out to his favorite bands, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. He dearly loved animals and enjoyed playing with and doting on all his pets.
Steven is survived by his wife of 43 years, Melanie (Sachs) Thomson; three children, daughter, Jaclyn Thomson, son, Kurtis Thomson (Melissa Gramajo) and daughter, Colleen Thomson (Gene Sivo); and two sisters, Diane Thomson (Richard Chandler) and Carolyn (John) Belisle; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and cherished friends. He is preceded in death by his late parents, Francis Dean Thomson and Dora May Thomson.
Steven touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege to know him. He was loved by so many and gave his love in return. He will be deeply missed by all but will remain in our hearts forever.
The family wishes that any donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
